"Rubbin' Renee" - My Racing Name!

I've mentioned before that I am a huge Nascar fan. It seems this fun fact about myself surprises many people. I guess I don't "look" like the typical Nascar fan. To be honest, seven years ago, I could have cared less about racing. But now? I love it! It wasn't until I attended a race for the first time that I actually grew an appreciation for the sport. There is something about sitting in the stands and anticipating that first lap of the race. Once you hear the ear piercing roar of race cars speeding past you at 200 mph and feel the wind from the passing cars slap you in the face, you are hooked. Watching it on TV doesn't do it justice. If you ever get the chance to go to a Nascar Nextel Cup race, I highly recommend it. It is a lot of fun. And if you like to "people watch," this alone is worth the money of your ticket! Over the years I've seen my fair share of race fans. Apparently, wearing a shirt to these events are an option. Let's see...I've seen the "toothless," and the "I think I'm Kenny Chesney" - complete with tight jeans, cowboy hat, dark suntan, shell necklace, and shirtless BEER GUT the size of a watermelon! I've seen "hair pulling" fist fights and tattooed women wearing bikini tops. (I should mention the breasts in these bikini tops often look like lead softballs sitting in the bottom of tube socks! Not a pretty sight.) I've seen many people escorted out by security (due to public intoxication) and joints openly being passed around for enjoyment. But my favorite has to be the man dressed head to toe in Dale Earnhardt Sr. clothing, carrying his own bag of urine! Evidently, he checked himself out of the hospital just to see his hero race. Now that is a true race fan!

This past Saturday was the Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte. I went to the race with my husband, sister and her husband's family. We had a great time "tailgating" and watching the race. However, the best part was visiting the "pits," courtesy of my friend Chris (who works for Kasey Kahne's race team). I was able to get an up close look at the different race teams preparing for Saturday's race. Of course, I couldn't leave without getting a picture of myself with Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car (my favorite driver)! Too bad his car sucked for the race!

A Happy Mother's Day!

Yesterday was a great day. It wasn't a busy day - but an easy-going, fun day. Kevin knew exactly how to pull my heart strings on Mother's Day...He let me sleep until 10:30! At 10:30, K-bugg couldn't wait any longer! She barged into the bedroom with my Mother's Day card. "Open it, Mommy!" she kept yelling. I staggered out of bed, sat on the couch, and opened my Mother's Day card. Inside was a lovely drawing K-bugg had made just for me. It also included a beautiful letter written by my husband and a piece of paper with "codes" written on it. I couldn't figure out what the codes were for. Kevin kept giving me hints...

"It's something you've been wanting."

"It's to help you reach your goal."

"You've been talking about this for months."

He finally had to tell me. It was a membership to the YMCA. I couldn't be happier. I packed on 40lbs while pregnant with Ella. I guess you could say I "threw caution to the wind" during my pregnancy when food was involved. I kept saying I would deal with the consequences later. So, now I have no excuses. I'm really excited about my membership. And I am proud of my husband for actually listening to me for once! (That's a joke - sort of.)

The rest of my day involved going out for lunch with my family, eating ice cream, watching K-bugg, Kevin and my niece play putt-putt golf, watching a movie and relaxing. It was a happy Mother's Day!

PS - Go visit my sister's blog for a beautiful Mother's Day entry. Tell her I sent you. Kelly in NC

Mother of the Year

If you are looking for locations to submit your ballot voting me Mother of the Year, you can leave those here...

Last week was a hectic week. My sister finally had her baby, tons of family was in town to welcome his arrival, and I had a hair appointment. Now of course, Grayson's arrival was the most important. However, when my sister went into labor on Wednesday night, I was hoping he would come before my hair appointment on Thursday morning! You see, my hair stylist stays busy and I have to book my hair appointment months in advance. Needless to say (IE - pics of me from Ella's birth), I was in desperate need of color, highlights, and a new cut. Grayson arrived late Wednesday night, so I was able to keep my appointment.

Fastforward to Thursday morning.

I woke up early to get two kids fed, dressed, and Kellynn off to school before my hair appointment. I'm still new at this "mother of two" thing, so my "getting up early" wasn't early enough. I realized quickly I was running behind. Kellynn was more difficult than normal about getting ready, Ella took forever to finish her bottle, and Kellynn's car seat was in Kevin's truck. I went outside to get Kellynn's carseat out of his truck and realized it was locked. I went inside to get the keys, but could not find them. In the mean time - Ella is crying because she didn't get to finish her bottle and Kellynn is asking 100 questions ("Where did you go, Mommy?" - "Why is Ella crying, Mommy?" - "Do I have to go to school, Mommy?" - "Can I have chocolate, Mommy?" - "Sheba [cat] is coughing up a hairball, Mommy!") I call Kevin and find out he has taken his truck keys to work with him. I can't find the spare set of keys and Kevin can't remember where he put them last. So while he's instructing me to go to different places in the house to find the spare keys, Ella is still crying and Kellynn is following me throughout the house with more questions. ARGH! I finally find the keys and go back to Kevin's truck to get the carseat. (Did I mention it was pouring down rain? - I am totally NOT making this up!) I get the carseat out, put it in my van, and then go inside to get the girls. As I'm putting Ella in her carseat (and Kellynn is standing over me to inspect), Ella pukes all over her outfit.

"Damn it!" I exclaim.

"Damn it, Ella!" repeats Kellynn.

"Uhhhhhh...WHAT did you say, Kellynn?"

"I said damn it."

"Kellynn, that is an ugly word and you shouldn't say it. MOMMY shouldn't even say it," I explain.

"Okay, Mommy. Don't say it again."

After redressing Ella and finally loading everyone in the van, I press the automatic garage door button as we're leaving. As the door is coming down, the cat decides to dart into the garage to get out of the rain. I then have to get out of the van, throw the cat out and attempt to put the door down again. Again, I am NOT joking when I tell you the mother f-ing cat runs back into the garage again! I almost said the "F word" out loud, but remembered the talk Kellynn and I had just had about saying ugly words. Instead, our conversation went something like this...

"I'm going to kill that freakin' cat!"

"What did you say, Mommy? You're going to kill the freakin' cat?!"

"Yes, Kellynn! I'm going to kill her if she runs into the garage again!!"

"You shouldn't say that, Mommy. It's not nice. We don't kill things."

So there you have it! This is why I deserve to be crowned "Mother of the Year." I'm teaching my daughter new words and about killing things! I don't know what it is about this age (4 year olds), but they don't miss anything!

One Month

Ella had her one month check up last Thursday. She is growing like a weed! They didn't measure her length this time, but they did weigh her. She weighed 10 pounds and 5 ounces. She is gaining about an ounce a day. She has been sleeping much better lately - 5 hours at a time! However, she decided at 4:30 this morning, it was time to start our morning. NOT! After a lot of rocking and singing (which did not help), I put her in the swing. That did the trick!

Advice Needed

Yesterday was my postpartum / post pregnancy check up with my doctor. Everything seems to be back to normal, including my blood sugar levels (Gestational Diabetes). I've lost 25 lbs since delivery, with 15 lbs to go. (I gained an estimated total of 40+ lbs during pregnancy.) During the visit, my doctor asked me about birth control.

This is where I need your input...

I am happy with two children. I don't plan to have anymore. I asked my doctor about having my "tubes tied." He was against this procedure, saying I am too young. He gave me other options to think about - one being "Mirena" which I believe is an IUD. It is placed in your uterus for up to 5 years. I really don't want to go back on the pill. I've been on the pill for 10+ years. Plus, I am bad about remembering to take the pill. According to my doctor, Mirena is very safe - opposed to IUDs used in the 70s and 80s. Does anyone have any thoughts on this type of birth control? Suggestions are welcome.

PS - I'm still in negotiations with Kevin about having a vasectomy. So far, it's not going so well.

Grayson, Jack and Ella

I am a mother, wife and full-time teacher, with a very sassy little girl (daughter 1) on my hands and another one following in her footsteps (daughter 2). And I wonder where the gray hairs are coming from?
