Almost 5...Acting More like 15!
Every day, Kellynn makes me question what my life is going to be like with her as a teenager. I don't need a fortune teller to tell me that we will have drama in our house when she hits the teen years! Take for example, what happened last week.
I am rushing around to get the girls ready to leave the house on time. Ella has a 9 month check up and I need to get Kellynn to daycare before the appointment. I call for Kellynn to get moving because I am ready to walk out of the door. Here she comes, carrying a purse-sized bag full of make-up.
"Where did all of that make-up come from?" I ask.
"Auntie gave it to me," she says.
"She gave you ALL of that?!"
"Yes," she replies. (I knew she had given her "play" make-up for Christmas - but didn't realize how much! Also, this make-up isn't "play" make-up at all. It's more like the real thing.)
"Please give me that bag of make-up. I thought Dad put that up the other night. You need Mommy or Daddy to play with make-up."
She immediately runs to her room with the bag. Again I ask for the make-up, while threatening to leave her (as I'm walking out the door). I have to start counting before she finally comes running.
"It's MY make-up! Auntie gave it to me. Can I take it to school for Show and Tell?" she asks.
"No! I'm not talking about it anymore. Get into the van before I leave you!"
She reluctantly hands over the make-up, but wants me to know she is upset. She stomps to the van, folds up her arms, and fumes all the way to daycare. I can hear her behind me, talking under her breath. I can see her in the rear-view mirror bobbing her head from side to side, while talking quietly to herself and making angry faces. She was clearly not happy with me. My thoughts? She'll get over it.
Fast forward to that afternoon, upon picking her up from school.
I walk into her classroom and about six children (including Kellynn) come running up to me from behind a shelf. They are all wearing pink sparkly lip gloss. Even the BOYS are wearing the lip gloss! Of course, I question her teacher (who is sitting across the room with other students) about the lip gloss.
I naively ask, "What is going on? Did someone get lip gloss out of the treasure box today?" (Kellynn is always bringing something home from the treasure box...candy, hair bows, bracelets, tattoos, etc.)
"Did Kellynn get out her lip gloss again? I told her to keep it in her cubby with the lipstick," she says.
"Lipstick?! Where did the lip gloss AND lipstick come from?" I ask.
"She brought it from home today," the teacher replies.
I look at Kellynn. She is staring up at me with those beautiful eyes and that devilish grin. I am thinking to myself...How did she bring the lip gloss and lipstick to school? I took her make-up away from her this morning - not to mention, she didn't have any pockets to put them in. I think I would have noticed her carrying something in with her when I dropped her off at school! So I ask...the idiot that I am...
"How did you bring this to school today? I didn't see you carry it in with you."
She holds up both arms and pulls at her long sleeves.
"I put them in here, Mommy."
The child hid lipstick and lip gloss in her sleeves! What am I in for?! She is only 5 (almost), and already smuggling "illegal" items to school.
